The number of children younger than 18 who were victims of crimes committed through social networking sites totaled 1,076 in 2012, exceeding 1,000 for the fourth consecutive year, the National Police Agency said Thursday.

The agency highlighted that children younger than 16 have accounted for more than 50 percent of the total for five straight years.

It said younger children tend to be more susceptible to crimes resulting from their use of social networking services, online games and profile sites.
